4.0 Cool Stuff / Good Vibe posted on May 28, 2008

After my last job, this one has been a breath of fresh air. It's kind of tough to get through the interview process (you'll be asked a lot about algorithm efficiency, big O notation, etc), but I've been working on some pretty hardcore world changing stuff. There's a scientific group that works mainly in C++ and a Java group that works on applications/engineering stuff. If you're applying for a C++ job, they'll be looking for machine vision / machine learning experience and probably expecting a PhD. On the Java side, they're concerned about experience working with highly available, highly parallelized systems.

For the moment the team is small and it's a nice balance of people who get along, but also take their work seriously enough to be productive. There's none of the desperation/hubris you see at a lot of startups. We also use Ubuntu, even on the desktop, so I would say this is a good place for Linux Zealots because your desktop environment will be Gnome. I also bring my Macbook to work sometimes and they're cool with that.

So far everyone more or less keeps their ego in check and I hope as we grow that cultural facet will remain unchanged. I would discourage prima donna types from working here, but smart, laid back folks interested in Haar wavelets should have a blast.
